Australians will be able to install new solar roof tiles as early as next year with Tesla now officially taking orders on their revolutionary new product. Tesla has been spruiking the durability of the tempered glass tiles and now offers an incredible warranty on the product. According to their website the warranty is “…the lifetime of your house, or infinity, whichever comes first.”

The Solar Roof, as Tesla calls it, was announced late last year after a merger between Tesla and solar equipment supplier SolarCity. CEO of Tesla Elon Musk announced via Twitter post this week that the company was taking orders from almost any country and delivery would begin in the United States this year and overseas next year.

A statement on Teslas website reads “Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to a sustainable energy future by creating products that are so compelling, there is no alternative.” It seems Tesla is making great inroads into this mission with the Solar Roof as the durability (see image below) and price point will be key selling points of the product, let alone the fact that the tiles generate electricity.

“The typical homeowner can expect to pay $US21.85 ($A29.70) per square foot for Solar Roof,” according to Tesla referring to costs for US customers. It is still unknown what the price will be for Australians but if the US cost is any indication, the signs are promising. Especially when you consider that according to Tesla, a typical household would only need to have 40 per cent of their roof to be covered with ‘active’ solar tiles. The rest can be made up of a ‘non active’ tile for a quarter of the price.

Australian’s looking to place an order for the solar roof can visit the Tesla website. You will be asked to hand over a ‘fully refundable’ AU$1,310 deposit upon placing an order.
